Utah is one of the few U.S.
states that allows politicians with a conflict
of interest to vote on issues related to their
conflict.
In most other political constituencies this type
of political behavior is considered an assault
on the integrity of our political system and an
abomination.
In most states, except Utah, even the appearance
of a conflict is enough to disallow a vote. For,
even the appearance of a conflict undermines the
confidence of citizens in the legislative process.
In
a recent Deseret News poll 88% of Utah voters
do not want legislators with a conflict of interest
to influence or vote on legislation in which they
are conflicted. As evidenced by the corruption
identified in our sample
conflict of interest report, they know how
such a temptation can become corrupting.
Our mission, plain and simple:
First, identify seriously conflicted members of
the Utah Legislature, inform the voters in their
districts of their conflicts and then work, on
a local level, to remove them from office.
Second, to change the law that now currently allows
legislators with a serious conflict of interest
to draft bills, discuss, and vote on bills with
which they are conflicted.
We invite you to join us in this worthy effort.
